All you need to know when looking for your first job in welding engineering

The Robert Walters Engineering Consultants recently held an information session for Welding engineering students at the De Nayer Campus of the Faculty of Engineering Technology (Leuven University).

During this information session, graduate students learned more about how to write a CV, interview tips, how Robert Walters can assist them in their job search, and what to expect in terms of salary, etc.

 

How to position yourself on the market

Before starting your job search, it is important to understand your career goals and personality: what is your passion, what are your “natural” strengths? Be realistic in your work/life ambitions.

Preparation is key: make sure you have investigated interesting opportunities on the market, and prepare yourself by researching the relevant companies.

Your CV

Your CV is a tool with one purpose: to gain an interview. It should present you in the best possible light and convince a prospective employer that you have what it takes to be successful in this specific position or career. You don't have much time to impress with your CV - research shows that employers scan, rather than read CVs.

Your salary

Salaries in Belgium are composed of:

• Gross monthly salary (month * 13,92)
• Bonus (variable – often performance based)
• Lunch vouchers (7€ , 1.09 € paid by the employer)
• Group insurance (% of gross salary, employer contribution)
• Health insurance (individual and/or family)
• Company car (+ fuel card) or contribution in public transport costs
• Holidays
• Monthly expense note
