Working as a credit analyst

Credit analysts possess a versatile skill set which leads to career opportunities in a range of areas, including corporate banking, asset management, aircraft leasing and insurance.

The role of a credit analyst is to assess a prospective borrower's ability to service a debt and involves in-depth analysis of a company's financials, business performance versus sector peers and other macro factors. A credit analyst will typically sit as part of a team, supporting a portfolio or relationship manager, working on new transactions as well as monitoring the performance of existing loans.

Necessary experience and qualifications

Employers have a preference for individuals who are undertaking a professional qualification; an accounting qualification is desirable for roles in corporate banking with the CFA seen as a requirement for asset management. Strong modelling skills are also attractive to employers in all areas. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) are important as a credit analyst will deal with clients as well as present cases to credit or investment committees.

Career path

An analyst will usually progress to managing their own credit portfolio, in some cases, having responsibility for client relationship management.
