A recent salary survey by recruitment specialist Robert Walters shows that almost three quarters (72%) of Belgian professionals expect a pay rise in 2025. Are you among those who will engage with management in January to negotiate a higher salary? Here are some practical tips to best prepare for this important moment.
Before going into the interview, it is crucial to be well-informed.
Research the prevailing salaries for similar positions within your sector and region. This will give you a clear idea of what you can reasonably expect and enable you to back up your request with concrete data.
It is important to have a clear picture of how the company is doing. Did the organisation post record profits over the past year or were financial targets not met? Have employees been laid off in the past 12 months? These are factors that influence the organisation's remuneration strategy - hence also the outcome of your negotiation interview.
Self-confidence plays a key role in salary negotiations. Make sure you are well prepared by listing your achievements and contributions to the company. List your key accomplishments, goals achieved and the value you have added to the company. This will help you argue convincingly why you deserve a pay rise.
It can be useful to practise the conversation beforehand with a friend, family member or mentor. This will help you convey your point of view clearly and confidently. Ask for feedback on your tone, body language and arguments to ensure you are well prepared for the actual interview.
Make a realistic and well-reasoned salary increase proposal. Also, be prepared to negotiate and be flexible. Remember to take into account fringe benefits: if your employer is unable to meet your initial request for a gross salary increase, you may want to consider alternative forms of compensation, such as extra holidays, bonuses, or training opportunities.
Regardless of the outcome of the interview, it is important to remain professional and positive. Thank your employer for their time and consideration. If your request is turned down, politely ask for feedback and inquire about the possibilities of discussing a pay rise in the future.
