Organisations usually have a clear picture of the interim manager they are looking for. It often involves specific professional knowledge or experience within a particular sector. The personal click also plays a role in the client's choice. Amaury Vanhoutteghem, senior consultant at international recruitment firm Robert Walters, shares some advice to keep in mind during your next job interview for a new interim management assignment.
Before going into the interview, make sure you have a thorough understanding of the organisation and the specific requirements of the assignment. This will enable you to highlight the right skills that match the client's needs during the interview. "Also check out the organisation's website, and the Linkedin profiles of the people you will meet," Amaury adds.
"Just like on your CV, it is effective to give concrete examples during the interview that highlight the required competences and experiences. The STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) can help here to make your point in a structured and convincing way," Amaury says.
"Be enthusiastic, show interest in the company and its employees and prove that you are not only competent, but also sociable and a good listener," advises Amaury. "During the interview, ask targeted questions to find out the client's needs. This shows your interest in the organisation and its challenges."
Analyse the information you get from the client and come up with solutions that meet their needs.
Show that you understand what is going on within the organisation and how you can add value. When doing so, cite concrete successes from your career, and - depending on the assignment - also mention hands-on, operational experience. "As an interim manager, it is important to emphasise that the purpose of the assignment is your main focus, and that you are motivated to carry out the assignment according to expectations," says Amaury.
Combining these tips will help you go into your job interviews confident and focused, increasing your chances of winning new contracts.
