Becoming a management assistant

At the heart of many organisations, management assistants provide administrative support to leaders and executives, playing a key role in a business’ growth and success. As the economy continues to improve, more companies are growing and requiring help to stay organized.

Why should I become a management assistant?

A management assistant is an ideal entry-level job for graduates looking to launch their career. If you enjoy helping and communicating with people on different levels and being responsible for the planning and organizational duties involved in maintaining a business, the role of management assistant could be for you.

If you are looking to pursue a career in a particular field or industry, it is an excellent way to get your foot in the door. You’ll learn the ins and outs of the industry and find out if you would like to pursue a career in the field, all the while building up your resume.

What will I do on a day-to-day basis?

As technology continues to advance and automate routine tasks, the role of today’s assistants is becoming more challenging and diverse.

 

Depending on the size of the company or the industry, your scope of duties could be quite large and vary significantly from day to day. Some typical responsibilities will include managing agendas, liaising with clients and staff members, creating and amending documents, organising trainings and events, arranging meetings, answering phones.

What salary can I expect as a management assistant?

Although the exact amount will depend on location, sector, budget and the job market, an entry level management assistant should be able to expect a gross monthly salary between 2000€ to 2500€, excluding benefits. Additional benefits are for example lunch vouchers, transportation allowance, performance bonus etc.

How can I get ahead of the competition? 

An Administrative Office Assistant Bachelor's Degre will always be a big plus. Pursuing training courses in business management, communication or systems knowledge will also give you a competitive edge over other candidates. Strong language skills, including the ability to speak Dutch, French and English, are sought-after by many employers. To make a good first impression, make sure you have a top quality cv and follow up after each of your job interviews.

What can management assistant jobs lead to?

As administrative assistants gain experience they can move up the ladder to more senior roles with greater responsibility and a better salary. If you decide to grow within the administrative profession, your options include:

  • Executive assistant/personal assistant
  • Office manager
  • Legal assistant


Motivated management assistants can also have the opportunity to move to other departments within their organisation, such as HR, sales or marketing.
