6 focal points for ambitious finance professionals
In 2025, success in finance is not just about numbers, but above all about impact. To stay relevant and seize career opportunities as a finance professional, it is essential to respond to the latest trends and developments.
Gemma Rodriguez, managing consultant at global talent solutions specialist Robert Walters, discusses six key areas finance professionals can focus on in 2025 to accelerate their careers.
1. ESG compliance and sustainability
Sustainability is no longer a buzzword, but a fundamental part of business strategies. ‘ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) has become a crucial pillar, both for investors and organisations,’ Gemma says. ‘Finance professionals who develop expertise in ESG reporting, sustainability initiatives and integrating ESG criteria into corporate strategies are positioning themselves as indispensable advisers in the boardroom.’
2. Data analysis and automation
Data analytics and automation are drastically changing the finance function. Processes such as accounting and reporting are increasingly being taken over by technology, creating space for finance professionals to focus on strategic work. ‘Knowledge of tools such as Power BI, Tableau and ERP systems is essential,’ says Gemma. ‘In addition, skills in interpreting data and turning it into actionable insights are a valuable asset. Those who master data analysis are seen as an important link in decision-making.’
3. Strategic leadership
Gemma: ‘The demand for finance professionals who not only understand the numbers but can also think strategically continues to grow. Developing leadership skills, such as decision-making, communication and stakeholder management, ensure that you are not only seen as a financial expert, but also as a strategic sparring partner who can help set the company's direction.’
4. Specialisation in niche sectors
‘Organisations increasingly value professionals with specific knowledge of their industry,’ notes Gemma. ‘Sectors such as technology, healthcare and renewable energy require in-depth expertise.
By specialising in a niche, you can stand out from others and add value in a way that only experts can.
'This opens the door to specialised roles and provides opportunities to grow faster within the sector.’
5. Change and risk management
Gemma: ‘In a world where economic and technological changes are the order of the day, risk management is becoming an indispensable skill. Professionals who can guide organisations in managing risk, creating crisis plans and anticipating market changes are able to build strong careers.’
6. Soft skills
‘While technical skills are indispensable, soft skills are increasingly making the difference,’ Gemma knows. ‘Finance professionals need to be able to translate complex financial insights into clear, understandable information for non-financial stakeholders. Effective communication, collaboration and team leadership are crucial skills to build trust and make an impact within an organisation.’
By investing in these skills and areas of expertise, you can have real impact as a finance professional and create opportunities to grow into strategic and managerial positions.
