As a Gen Z professional, you have a fresh perspective, digital skills, and a strong sense of what is meaningful. Yet there are challenges specific to your generation. Jens Spittael-Speeckaert, associate director at global talent solutions specialist Robert Walters, lists the biggest challenges Gen Z faces in the workplace and explains how to deal with them successfully.
Growing up in a world of instant output - think likes, chats, streaming and same-day-delivery - has created an expectation that everything moves quickly. In the workplace, however, this is often not the case. Building careers and developing skills takes time, patience and perseverance.
Jens: ‘To address this, focus on small successes rather than just looking at end goals. Celebrate your milestones and discuss with your manager how to take steps towards your ambitions.
Having a clear growth path gives you motivation and a sense of control.
‘As a digital native, it is natural to use technology in everything from communication to work processes. Yet this can create a reliance that is sometimes mistaken. For example, constantly checking your phone during meetings can come across as if you are not engaged, when your intention is actually positive.
You can avoid this by deliberately putting your phone away during important moments. Show commitment by actively listening and contributing. Use technology as a tool to work more efficiently, but don't let human contact go to waste. Offline communication skills are essential for building relationships in the workplace,’ Jens says.
‘Gen Z's focus on mental health represents major progress, but it can be difficult to balance this with the high expectations you place on yourself. The drive to always be accessible and deliver perfect work can cause stress and even lead to burnout,’ warns Jens.
‘Setting clear boundaries is crucial in this. Communicate when you are offline and take time to relax after work hours. Employers increasingly understand how important a good balance is, so don't be afraid to discuss challenges. This not only helps you, but also contributes to a healthier work environment for everyone.’

Generation Z prefers to work in an environment where equality and openness are key. Recent research by Robert Walters shows that 65% of Gen Z'ers prefer a team-based structure, and 30% prefer a flat organisation. Traditional hierarchies can therefore feel constraining.
‘To deal with this, it is important to connect with people in different roles, including executives,’ advises Jens. ‘Be proactive in sharing ideas and respect the existing structure, while showing that your voice adds value. This creates space for collaboration and trust, regardless of hierarchy.’
Gen Z is looking for more than a paycheck. They want to make an impact, contribute to a bigger picture and do work that has meaning. If this perspective is lacking, motivation can quickly dwindle.
Jens: ‘Find ways to link your role to the bigger picture. Understand how your work contributes to the organisation's goals and link this to your personal values, such as sustainability or social inclusiveness. This will help you find fulfilment even in daily tasks.’
Generation Z has plenty to offer in the workplace. By consciously dealing with challenges, you can not only avoid these pitfalls, but also show why your generation is a valuable addition to any organisation. Work smart, keep learning and, above all, be authentic - this is how you will make a difference!
