Spring cleaning for your CV in 6 steps
Spring is just around the corner and that means not only longer days, blooming flowers and warmer weather, but also ... the annual spring cleaning! But while you're busy tidying up your house or sprucing up your garden, why not give your CV the same boost? Even if you are not actively applying for jobs, it is always useful to have a tidy, updated CV on hand. You never know when you might come across the perfect opportunity.
So blow the dust off your CV and give it a fresh update with these 6 steps from Clarissa Pryce, manager at recruitment specialist Robert Walters.
1. Clear up old information
A real spring clean starts with getting rid of old clutter. Take a critical look at your CV and remove outdated or irrelevant information. Clarissa: "Is your summer job from 15 years ago still on there? Time to put that behind you. Focus on the past 10-15 years of your career and make sure only relevant experience and skills remain."
2. Revitalise your profile
Your personal introduction at the top of your CV is like the front door of your house - it is the first impression you make. "Make it inviting and attractive by adding a short profile description or a powerful personal mission statement," advises Clarissa. "Start from your most recent achievements and make sure it reflects your enthusiasm for your field. A fresh, up-to-date profile immediately grabs the attention of recruiters."
3. Let your achievements flourish
Clarissa: "You have undoubtedly achieved numerous successes since the last time you updated your CV. Make sure these are visible! Include concrete results and figures where possible. For example, have you completed a project that saved costs or implemented a new system? Show it and be proud of your accomplishments. Instead of ‘Responsible for increasing sales’ write, for example, ‘Increased sales by 20% in six months.’ This will impress recruiters and hiring managers much more."
4. Polish up your skills
Professional fields are changing rapidly and new technologies and methods are constantly emerging. Make sure your skills are up-to-date and relevant to the current job market. Add any new courses, certificates or training you have taken. "And don't forget your soft skills, such as teamwork, adaptability and communication - these are just as important!" adds Clarissa.
5. Modernise the layout
"Much like interior design, the world of CVs also has its trends. What was trendy ten years ago may look a bit dated now," warns Clarissa.
A modern CV is clean, uncluttered and to the point.
"Avoid long full sentences and make use of bullet points to quickly reveal your most important qualities. Visuals, such as subtle icons or graphics, can also help draw attention to the right things and make the overall look appealing."
6. Call in a cleaning buddy
"A second pair of eyes is always valuable! Have a friend, family member or mentor read your CV. They can point out mistakes or areas for improvement that you may have missed yourself. Feedback is precious, so don't be afraid to ask for help," says Clarissa.
Bonus tip: don't forget your LinkedIn profile
Clarissa: "Your CV and LinkedIn profile go hand in hand, so make sure they reinforce each other. Recruiters and employers often check your LinkedIn profile after reviewing your CV. An up-to-date LinkedIn profile also increases your visibility and may even yield unexpected opportunities. So update your profile immediately with your latest work experience, skills and a professional profile picture. Add a catchy summary that matches your CV."
An updated CV will boost your self-confidence and open up career opportunities. So, shake off that winter fatigue, and give your CV a well-deserved revamp today!
