In 2025, the engineering and supply chain management field in Belgium is poised for dynamic evolution, driven by innovation, efficiency, and the pressing need to address skill gaps. As businesses navigate the challenges of a rapidly changing global landscape, several trends are emerging that will define hiring practices and workforce development in these critical fields. Jülide Tunali, senior manager at recruitment specialist Robert Walters, explains what's in store for the engineering & supply chain management job market in 2025.
“The coming year will see Belgium’s engineering and supply chain sectors placing an intensified emphasis on efficiency and innovation, while operations start shifting into Eastern Europe and Far East Asia and leaders are challenged to adopt a ‘do more with less’ approach,” Jülide knows. “Companies will prioritize optimizing operations while pushing the boundaries of technological advancement. This shift requires leaders who not only have technical expertise but also the flexibility to adapt to rapidly changing business environments.”
Soft skills, often seen as secondary in technical fields, will emerge as indispensable attributes for leaders in the engineering & supply chain field. Jülide: “Strong communication, emotional intelligence, and commercial insight will complement technical acumen, enabling leaders to foster collaboration, drive change, and align teams with strategic goals. The ability to spearhead transformational initiatives will distinguish successful professionals, underscoring the increasing importance of well-rounded leadership.”
“To address skill shortages, particularly in senior and specialized roles, the inclusion of international talent will be critical. Candidates with global experience and a broad perspective will bring fresh ideas and a competitive edge to organizations operating in an interconnected market,” says Jülide. “As such, hiring practices will evolve to value personality, problem-solving capabilities, and visionary thinking, alongside traditional technical qualifications.”
Despite ongoing efforts to improve gender diversity, the engineering and supply chain management roles in Belgium remain male-dominated, with only 14% of roles occupied by women. Addressing this imbalance is critical to fostering innovation and competitiveness. Companies must actively implement initiatives that attract, retain, and promote female talent, including mentorship programs, inclusive hiring practices, and clear career pathways. “However, the issue goes beyond the labour market, rooted in persistent misconceptions that boys are better at maths and logical thinking,” Jülide notes. “Schools need to actively challenge such biases and promote STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) for girls. After all, an engineering degree offers many opportunities.”
“For jobseekers, the trends mentioned above signal the importance of strategic career planning. Aligning with companies that share their values and vision will be crucial. Furthermore, being open to international opportunities can significantly enhance career prospects, providing exposure to diverse challenges and markets. In an increasingly competitive landscape, boldness, adaptability, and a focus on long-term alignment will be key differentiators for ambitious professionals,” Jülide concludes.
